It's hard to find a laptop for under $600 that isn't just swimming in bloatware. The optical drive reads and writes DVDs, and the 802.11n Wi-Fi has a physical on/off switch built into the edge of the palm rest. In addition to the common ones, like two USB 2.0 slots, an Ethernet connection, a VGA output, and a multi-format card reader (SD, MMC, MS/Pro, xD), it also includes an ExpressCard slot and a combo eSATA/USB port. The G560-0679AKU has a better than average collection of ports for a budget laptop. The 500GB 5,400rpm hard drive isn't as large as the 640GB drive found in the Dell Inspiron 15R-1847MRB ($729.99, 3.5 stars), but it's twice the size of the 250GB drive found in the Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4025.

The G560-0679AKU also comes with plenty of storage space.

The 1,366 by 768 resolution allows you to watch 720p video, which is more than sufficient for viewing DVDs and Web video from sources like Netflix and Hulu.

The 15.6-inch display is a widescreen, large enough for one or two people to watch a movie comfortably, or to run two large windows side by side for multitasking. The silky matte finish of the touchpad has a nice feel to it, but will likely develop shiny spots as it is worn from regular use. Whereas many manufacturers are including multitouch capability into their laptops, even when the functionality isn't quite right, Lenovo plays it safe, offering only single-touch tracking that works exactly as it should. While the keyboard is comfortable to type on, Lenovo has tweaked the layout slightly, swapping the positions of the function key and the Ctrl key -a small thing to get used to, but still bothersome. The full-size keyboard has a chiclet-style layout, with a compact numeric pad, which is common for 15.6-inch laptops. The laptop itself measures 1.4 by 15 by 9.6 inches (HWD), and weighs 5.3 pounds, on a par with other 15-inch desktop replacement laptops. The plastic chassis has very little flex to it, and molded into the lid is a ridge for improved grip while carrying. While some low priced laptops have tried to draw attention with bright colors and finishes, like the candy colored shell of the Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4025 ($498 list, 3 stars), Lenovo has gone for a more sedate look, covering the G560 in matte gray. It has a 500GB hard drive, a dual-core Core i3 CPU, and a 720p widescreen display.Īs with most budget laptops, the G560-0679AKU's chassis is made of plastic. While most budget laptops force you to make significant compromises in order to find a deal, the Lenovo G560-0679AKU ($599 list from Tiger Direct) manages to fit your budget without making many sacrifices. You're forced to make decisions between fashion and function, to sacrifice features for a smaller price tag, and deal with gobs of bloatware in your quest for a laptop that fits your financial needs. Shopping for a budget laptop can be a daunting task.
